Nordstrom Grand Opening Gala

United Way of Salt Lake's Womens Philanthropic Network (WPN) are the recipients of all proceeds for this fabulous event! Guests enjoyed the atmosphere of the beautiful new store where they experienced a shopping event with a live fashion show, fun music and delicious food and fun drinks. One fun detail of this event was the signature drink of the night, the "Murray Cocktail". Many Young Leaders attended the event, over $78,000 was raised. All of these resources will be directed to support the WPN Immigrant and Refugee Integration program expenses. Good time was had by all!

Lunch with a Leader

Young Leaders enjoyed lunch with Gary Peterson and David Sturt with O.C. Tanner Company. Young Leaders were entertained with learning more about the O.C. Tanner mission and able to learn about leadership and civic engagement from one of our communities best! Thank you O.C. Tanner!

Service Project, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Young Leaders stuffed 2000 financial resource packets for low-income working families. These packets will be passed out to local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. At these sites individuals and families receive help with filing their taxes. Many families are able to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) when filling their taxes. This is a credit that helps low income working families.

Service Project, St. Vincent de Paul

Young Leaders served lunch at St. Vincent de Paul in downtown Salt Lake. We enjoyed giving back to the community by preparing trays that were served to the public. This was a humbling day where Young Leaders learned first hand of the hunger issues in our community. This cafeteria is open to the public where anyone can receive a hot meal.

Advocacy Training 2008

Young Leaders joined the Women's Philanthropic Network (WPN) at St. Marks Hospital for our third annual Advocacy Training. One of United Way of Salt Lake's own Bill Crim opened up the training with his comments on why public policy work is important to the work we are acomplishing. We heard remarks from Sentor Hillyard, Rep. Bikoupski, advocate and Young Leader Heather Trittin who is with UCAPA and lobbist, Kate Bradshaw with Parsons, Behle & Latimer.

Power of Your Purse

Young Leader women were invited to join the United Way of Salt Lake Women's Philanthropic Network or better known as the WPN for their third annual Power of Your Purse Event, held at The Grand America Hotel. Speaker, Lynne Twist, Founder, Soul of Money Institute gave wonderful remarks of how she has dedicated her life's work to empowering women to examine their connection with money--how it's earned, spent, invested, and given away. Her unique insights inspired the crowed to transform your relationship with money and life to be the change you with to see in the world.

Today Young Leaders enjoyed breakfast with United Way of Salt Lake Tocquville Society. "Breakfast with a Leader" J. Barry Griswell, Board Chair, Principal Financial Group. He gave a wonderful presentation on buisness, philanthropy, and United Way. Special thanks to Jan Bayle and Deloitte & Touch for sponsoring this inspiring message at The Alta Club.

Community Learning Center Tour

The Advocay & Public Policy Sub-committee toured one of a community learning centers United Way of Salt Lake supports. A community learning center is a philosophy, a place, and a set of partnerships between a school and other community resources. Resources are provided not only to students but also to entire families with the objective of empowering and supporting parents to be engaged in the education of their children, while also addressing their own barriers. The integrated focus on academics, services, supports, and opportunities leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities.

A model community learning center consists of:
High quality core instructional programs
Educational and life skill enrichment for children and families
Social service supports to remove barriers to learning for children and families

As part of United Way of Salt Lake's Community Learning Centers initiative, four pilot schools have been selected to receive grants and staffing support for the establishment or expansion of local community learning centers.

Young Leaders relaxed and socialized in the evening atmosphere of the Twilight Concert Series. This event took place on Thursday, August 7, 2008 from 5-7 PM on the Fresh Air Patio of the Wells Fago Building in Downtown Salt Lake City.

Family Fun Night at the Neighborhood House

Young Leaders enjoyed giving back to the community by organizing and participating with The Neighborhood House, a long time United Way partner. Gavin Reese, Holland & Hart, and his Sub-committee, did a fabulous job planning a Family Fun Night that was enjoyed by over 100 people. Thank you to Nicholas and Company, Inc. for generously donating a delicious dinner for all participants. Speakers volunteered by giving educational workshops on our Utah Saves program, Healthy Choices, a program from Intermountain Healthcare and a Summer Reading a program presented by Headstart. Children enjoyed a carnival style party that included fun activities to entertain all ages. Special thanks goes out to two Young Leaders, Greg Summerhays, Workers Compensation Fund, for donating 100 books in Spanish to each child who attended and Chris Hard, Secure Horizons, for donating 15 gift cards to give away to parents who attended the workshops!
